I still remember the manager who thought handing out vendor / conference swag was a great morale booster. This always also the same guy who got the position before the position was advertised to us (we got to play along to fill hr quotas), so no surprise our new manager was a bigger numpty than the guy he replaced.
On the other hand, most middle managers are unable to actually understand the fact that most employees are motivated more by non-financial stuff. You spend, if you’re lucky, A FUCKING THIRD of every workday at work. The whole ‘package’ must be at least acceptable to the employee or she’ll go. It’s really that simple.
This is why I like 12s. I only work three days this week, but still get 36 hours. And even when a shift is “only” 8 hours, there’s very little that can be done with the remaining time in the day when getting home. Work days are work days, regardless of hours worked.
Having more days off than on is priceless.
Yeah, but a lot of that ‘non-financial’ stuff isn’t like ping pong tables or office nerf wars, but is just things like ‘my boss doesn’t micro manage the hell out of me’ and ‘my coworkers are nice’ and ‘my company treats me like an adult and is reasonable about taking time off, working from home and other incidental life issues’.
- the work is enjoyable (right balance, fun, engaging, etc)
- the coworkers are nice
- the pay is good
You need at least 2 out of 3 and the 3rd can’t be negative.
Who was this from again?
