Can someone explain how a US state can legally/physically block access to anything from a US federal law enforcement agency?

I genuinely don’t understand what’s going on here.

      1. Start breaking the law
      2. Someone says “that’s illegal, you can’t do that”
      3. Continue breaking the law
      4. Someone takes you to court
      5. Continue breaking the law
      6. Court decides you’re breaking the law, tells you to stop
      7. You say “oh, my bad” and stop
      8. There are no consequences for your transgressions and by the time the courts made a decision you had already achieved your goals.

Okay, here is the advanced legal analysis of the situation:

Laws only matter when they’re enforced.

That’s it. That’s what Texas is banking on.

This is a big Republican tactic. If the Republicans [aka the GOP] have control of a state government, they can pass a law that they know will be struck down in Federal court. Say they mandate that all classrooms have a cross on the wall. The Left has to spend time and money fighting the law. Meanwhile, the GOP can tell their voters that they, the GOP, are protecting the rights of the persecuted Christians. Since the GOP runs the state government, they don’t have to pay for the law suits out of their own pockets, the taxpayers foot the bill.

It a political theater that panders to their base, and costs the Left money to fight.

This state and federal authority confrontation reminds me of Alabama, 1962. Of course, what happened then was the President issued an executive order which federalized the Alabama National Guard, and then commanded they stand down.

It’s probably something more like Gross Negligence Manslaughter

Gross negligence manslaughter is a crime that is committed when someone in an official position commits an unlawful act that they should have been able to see would result in the death of another.

He did, so instead they stop the border patrol and let them drown.

Gross Negligence Manslaughter - illegally prevented the border guard from saving them resulting in their reasonably predicted death.

They didn’t physically drown them themselves, so a straight Murder charge wouldn’t stick.

Oh anyone sane is welcome to seek refugee status in the US. I just feel like the majority of idiots are currently located in these two states, so it’d be easier to save the few with braincells left and then cut the land mass off like a cancerous tumor.

The remaining population will enjoy it, being their own “independent countries” while not having to worry about those inconvenient things like women and LGBTQ+ people accessing Healthcare. Then they can be free to enjoy all the oppression that God intended.

Welcome to the soft coup. All but guaranteed based on how the US dealt with the hard coup attempt. They saw the consequences for actual treason and though to themselves, “I bet I can get away with this.” You just know DeSantis is chomping at the bit to ignore the law once his campaign meets it’s eventual end.

Texas politicians use illegal immigration as a wedge issue to fire up voters. Despite the fact that immigration across the Texas/Mexico border goes in both directions and generally hasn’t changed in several decades, Texas politicians have increasingly used the fact that illegal immigration exists to distract their racist and xenophobic conservative voters from seeing how shitty their policies actually are.

It’s rage bait for conservative voters. Just like how republican politicians have been sending bus loads of immigrants to Northern cities. There’s no purpose except to stroke the hate boners of their voters.

Now Texas authorities have illegally issued orders to stop border patrol (a federal agency) from intervening on the increasingly hostile and deadly measures to keep immigrants from crossing the border. Despite the fact that seeking asylum is in fact a legal act. In a recent case, Texas authorities stopped border patrol from rescuing a mother and her drowning children, all of which are now presumed dead.

Gov. Abbot said only a few days ago that he would order Texas authorities to shoot immigrants but he can’t because “Biden would charge him with murder”

Republicans expect this issue to be the double whammy of “look see we’re doing something about immigrants” and “big bad Biden is trying to stop us!” and look great to their racist, xenophobic base

My conservative mother in Minnesota keeps talking about “our southern border”, and I silently am laughing about how it sounds like she is arguing about Iowans crossing illegally into Minnesota…

Point being, the rage baiting works around the entire country for xenophobic conservatives.

Starting to escalate to “do what I want / let me do what I want, or I’ll shoot you” at some point has been in the right-wind playbook for a while now. The Florida State Guard is an experiment with it (within the “establishment”, which is much more dangerous than something like the Proud Boys or Patriot Front); this is another. It seems actually pretty important exactly how this plays out and whether it “works” or not.

The new estimates do not reflect changes that have occurred since apprehensions and expulsions of migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border started increasing in March 2021. Migrant encounters at the border have since reached historic highs.

No offense but posting 2 year old information and pretending it is current is basically a form of misinformation.

Who do you think electing a dem helps? It’s far right VS mid (and allowing themselves to be pulled farther) right.

Vote Republican and get fascism, vote Democrat and get fascism in 4 years as the dems let Republicans overhaul the system from the bottom up cause the only true crime to a dem is hurting Republican feels. If you don’t think dems are fascist look to 2016 when they told the primary winner to suck it then went to court to tell their voters to suck it.

I’ll be voting third party instead of fascism or fascism enablers. Now please enjoy your rant about how me and other leftists are simultaneously stupid useless babies and also so powerful that we singlehandedly turn elections.
