      It’s even more boring than that - the license plate system already searches ambiguous characters. It’s almost like this issue comes up even without people gaming the system.

          do check to see if it’s \
            actually == i

          Something like that, yeah, I think the system automatically checks… Although this has 8 ambiguous characters, so actually you could have 256 cars with virtually indistinguishable plates, which is a lot. I believe custom plates have an approval process, and I wonder if this would be part of it. Like, “Yeah, no more black lincoln town cars with all I’s and 1’s, something’s up.”

      This is why I don’t have a tag on my car. Can’t track my license plate if I don’t have a license plate. It’s foolproof!

        This is even dumber than the morons who think any plate that’s days “private” has any hope of passing any kind of check.

          If all license plates said “private” or “1ii11i1i” they’d never catch us all

    Pretty sure the database actually treats them as the same character. So not sure if someone can’t have a different arrangement of I and 1 or if they all just get investigated if one of them commits a crime.

      Nowadays we just call that “smurfing”, and it’s a plague on every online game with a ranking system.

    Can’t say too much but god I hate this so much. Used to work a call center and someone had a username that was all 1,l,I s and there was no way to easily identify between those 3 characters. For someone to verify who they were they needed to tell us their username and some other info. So I had to waste nearly 30 fucking minutes dealing with this stupid shit before we could proceed forward and we couldn’t just DC the person.
