Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of serious illness

If you’ve been getting Covid, that’s you. Wear a mask. This isn’t rocket science, it’s basic math. More vulnerable people leads to more infections, more infections leads to more opportunities to spread to vulnerable people, etc, etc. It’s a feedback loop and it’s leading to an increase in the spread of freaking everything. doomer

I saw human metapneumo plenty of times when I worked pediatrics, no idea why its coming up now. We had a big wave a couple years ago too.

Its little known to like the regular public but thats cause its like RSV for healthy adults - you get an annoying cough and feel vaguely bad for a while. It hits kids and elderly hard, of course, and anyone immunocompromised. The pneumo part is because it often leads to secondary bacterial pneumonia.

Im a little surprised its being reported on at all tbh

I caught a particularly bad strain once when I worked on an Infectious Diseases ward. Way before COVID19, we had a suspect TB case that turned out just to be HMPV in a traveler. The senior registrar was like “it’s fine we can stop all mask precautions it’s just human meta pneumo virus!”, a week later there was barely any doctors, nurses or allied health left to turn up. I’ve only ever been that sick when I’ve had covid19 or influenza.

Its a known possible nosocomial infection risk, air droplets and surface to mouth/eyes contamination if I remember it right. It makes it annoying to gown up and put the full ppe on.
