Far from the first time the KMT has done something like this. it’s not really a sign of anything changing.

Members of the US Congress make official visits to Taipei, triggering multiple rounds of reciprocal tariffs. The Chinese MFA spokesperson reaffirms the one China policy. The leader of the DPP claims an invasion is imminent. The latest Taiwanese TV show about a sissypee invasion has just been released. The US President makes some generic statements about defending Taiwan.
The year is 2226.

according to the international rules based order it’s now acceptable to just kidnap other world leaders or kill diplomats that you invited to peace talks so it could get interesting I guess
I would be honestly ok with China doing a Venezuela-style SpecOp in Taiwan to kidnap Lai and drag him to Beijing to put him on trial for separatist terrorism.
Hell they probably have such a contingency in mind now after what Trump did in January and in case Lai gets too belligerent.
i have the displeasure of knowing some diaspora taiwanese nationalists and i can’t wait for the meltdown that would come of a concrete timeline for reunification.
