How does no shopping part play out in these? Isn’t everyone just going to end up buying a bit more over the following week and even things out?

      symbolic gesture.

and yes, the next day every grocery store will be slammed.

but it makes people FEEL like they did something important.

just like my neighbors FEEL like they are fighting injustice by putting up lawn signs, but when it comes to local city politics, they are NIMBY on everything. because it’s not about actually improving anything, that would have real world impacts! it’s about FEELING like you are so you can post about it on social media or brag about how ‘activist’ you are.

Meanwhile when a affording a housing project is proposed a few blocks away, you FIGHT LIKE HELL to prevent it from being built. Oh, they want to add bike lanes to your street to increase cycling and decrease car use? FIGHT LIKE HELL. etc etc.

And I live in one of the most progressive cities in the USA. We recently passed a city wide zoning reform and reqmoved parking minimums for development… the city council did it on a big margin too… and a huge chunk of the landed gentry citizenry who live in 2 million dollar homes… that won’t be impacted by any of this… WENT INSANE. now every lawn is no longer BLM. it’s CITIZENS FOR HOUSING AFFORDABILITY. and by affordability… they mean keep housing as expensive as possible so that only rich white people can afford to live here, and keep their taxes as low as possible, of course.

and in the dog park if the ask me my opinion on all this ‘massive over development’ and the ‘loss of parking’ i’m like ‘yeah it’s great’ and they call me a capitalist pig, or a communist, depending on the day.

Are you me? Been out of a job for over a year. The IT industry fucking sucks right now. Only got one interview for an entry level job, and it was obvious to me and the interviewer that I was overqualified for the position. And that was LAST July.

That sucks so much and I’m sorry to hear that. Feels like the job market is “good” about a tenth of the time and it’s terrible and “It’s rough out there” for the remaining majority.

A relative of mine is a nurse and has been out of a job for many months. That blows my mind!

Feels like a major indicator of a crumbling empire and trashed economy when IT and medical professionals aren’t getting work or callbacks. Holy cow.

I am going on 18 months. I have had 2 interviews. You are right, this is the worst job market I have had to participate in in the 15 years I have been working.

Y’know usually I ask myself why I open up Lemmy; often the events that reach the top are basically doom scrolling.

But this made my day. There’s also a related article I should repost about Christians mobilizing and struggling to reclaim our faith’s narrative from the fascists.

Today is one of those rare “hope scrolling” days!

I’d rather still see Christians mobilize to just recognize fairytales and dump religion altogether, it’s the only sure way forward for them

You’re not going to get a significant portion of religious people to abandon their religion. But if tolerant religious people reclaim their narrative from intolerant religious people, relegating the intolerant back to the shadows of obscurity where they belong, then you no longer need to convince people to give up their religion.

If you’ve never “practiced” a religion, then its pretty easy to be judgmental towards it. Many people grow up in very religious households and it’s hard to beak away from what was so normal for so long. I grew up in one of these households, and while I don’t actively participate in going to church anymore, it still helped shape me to be who I am, and I wouldn’t have such a strong core group of friends without it.

All the crazy stuff people associate with Christians is due to televangelists mostly being predatory, movies/TV, bad spotlight or events coming to light (like ~20 years ago there media focused on all the Catholic boys who were molested by various priests).

I, myself, am not about to get preachy and defensive towards religion, but I would like to play devils advocate and argue that the racial equality fight, women’s rights, and more recently LGBTQ movement towards equal healthcare and or acceptance is no different than a simple:

“If you’re going to be accepting of somebody, you should be accepting of everybody”.

Funny how some (not specifically picking on you or anyone) can get so defensive and upset fighting for acceptance of one thing while simultaneously they themselves can’t accept others merely for their beliefs… Kind of hypocritical, isn’t it?

Ah, the acceptance of non- acceptance argument. Most religious groups are against a lot of those groups you mentioned, especially LGBT - some actively so. You don’t get an exemption from morality for being religious.

You can reject non-acceptance. But in that case, then how does the argument apply against tolerant religious people mobilizing to reclaim the narrative from intolerant religious people?

It sounds like you’re failing to discern between the two, which is called an overgeneralization.

Understandable, and that’s the issue. I’m not saying morality should be an exemption, but there’s a difference between actively supporting, condemning, and just allowing people to coexist-knowing we’re the same yet not all the same.

The majority of religions are based on imposing some sort of rule based morality. And often these rules seem to go against the notion of letting certain different people coexist - at least that’s how it plays out in practice. So I think the default suspicion of any religious group is reasonable and founded in reality. You may have an all inclusive religion and that’s great, but you then must see how that conflicts with most other religions. I don’t care what gods you believe in, but I care if you try to impose an arbitrary morality on others.

I am judgemental against people who value “belief without evidence”

That is a fucking stupid principle around which to organize your life, and it is inherently incompatible with a modern technological civilization.

and ofc I fight hard not to be a militant Dawkins-style asshat.

I try to be more like Apu the vegetarian than Lisa the vegetarian.

    Great to hear!

And to those who participated: keep going with your shopping boycott. Avoiding a purchase today isn’t meaningful if you just head out to Walmart or buy from Amazon tomorrow.

Choose stores whose values support yours, shop local, and do without when there is no alternative.

I feel a little guilty by not skipping work entirely, but I have the legal minimum of paid time off. So I’m technically on the clock, but I’m not doing any work.

This is a valid and essential role. Remember when the corporate media was spamming out all those articles on “quiet quitting”? This is exactly what they fear. If you show up to work, clock in, do nothing of value, and clock out, you’re costing your workplace money AND denying them that role.

If I could, I’d do the same. Apply to be some office grunt at Meta or Amazon, sweet talk my manager, do a bunch of meaningless work like configuring things on the PC and taking inventory of random shit, and then clock out. Gamify metrics. Plan stupid projects with the corpo chatbot. Burn money and time. It’s one of those “death by 1000 cuts” actions, and it benefits each individual person because you still get paid. Win-win.

If there’s going to be any kind of national strike, it will have to be organized outside of the internet, since the internet is compromised.
