Most people who aren’t connected to the world of wrestling won’t know this, but freestyle and greco-roman wrestling are a big deal there. Consistently, for decades, many of the world’s top performing wrestlers have been from Iran. In the current rankings, at almost every weight there’s an Iranian wrestler in the top 5. This is way down on the list of concerns regarding the war, but as a wrestler and a wrestling enjoyer, I hope their athletes can find a safe place to train. Sports can encourage toxic nationalism, but wrestling has often been able to maintain a degree of internationalism on the world competition scene. I hate everything about what’s being done to these people.
