since stackoverflow is dead and reddit is also on the way to its grave, I was wondering if we can have enough knowledge base here so that Lemmy comes on the first page of a search query. I know it’s very hard to archive and I haven’t even seen a single result from lemmy unless I specifically add ‘lemmy’ keyword to it.
side tangent: Reddit results are also not shown unless we add ‘reddit’ keyword but sometimes even if you don’t add ‘reddit’ you can see it on the first result.

Depends on the instance, some can say “hey don’t index us” whereas others can say “hey index us so we grow”, each instance admin has that decision however search engines can ignore the request to not index and do it anyways.
Oh man, banning indexing has the same vibe as Piefed banning all the most active users. Apparently, you can run part of the internet, and still not know how internet communities work.

I also think it would kill Lemmy–getting to be the first results on Google is too valuable a prize. We’d be overrun by bots and astroturfed to hell.

That’s true. Search is slowly but steadily being replaced by AI, which makes SEO much less of a threat.
Edit: But on the other hand, it makes data set manipulation much more valuable. Instead of just trying to pump up the stats of ONE post, you have bot armies making hundreds of posts and comments to try to influence the training data. That’s actually worse.

I’ve hardly see any really useful technical discussion on Lemmy rivaling the discussion on other sites. Mostly what I’ve seen here is people asking how to fix their grub on Linux mint or some such things.
Not really any specific swarming around other issues and/or attempts to resolve them so far. All discussion is mainly political or gets into those dumb reddit circle jerk comment sections where people just make funny/ironic comments. The type of behavior they leaned on reddit to farm karma but is mostly useless here.
Idk as the internet gets more and more massive it’s hard to steer where the discussions happen if there aren’t many relevant discussions already happening.
So the only think you’ll probably find in a search engine related to Lemmy will be shitposting memes
