The fall of the Western Roman Empire, also called the fall of the Roman Empire or the fall of Rome, was the loss of central political control in the Western Roman Empire, a process in which the Empire failed to enforce its rule, and its vast territory was divided among several successor polities. The Roman Empire lost the strengths that had allowed it to exercise effective control over its Western provinces; modern historians posit factors including the effectiveness and numbers of the army, the health and numbers of the Roman population, the strength of the economy, the competence of the emperors, the internal struggles for power, the religious changes of the period, and the efficiency of the civil administration. Increasing pressure from invading peoples outside Roman culture also contributed greatly to the collapse. Climatic changes and both endemic and epidemic diseases drove many of these immediate factors.

The disintegration of the Western Roman Empire unfolded gradually during the Migration Period (c. 400–800 CE), as waves of migrating and invading peoples reshaped Europe. After the death of Theodosius I (reign 379–395 CE), the last emperor to govern both East and West, the empire was formally divided, leaving the weaker Western half vulnerable. Over the following decades, military defeats, economic strain, and internal instability combined with external pressures from Visigoths, Vandals, Huns, and other groups, eroding imperial authority. The conventional “fall” is often dated to 476 CE, when Romulus Augustulus (reign 475–476) was deposed, or to 480 CE, with the assassination of Julius Nepos (reign 474–480), the last legitimate Western emperor.

Yet Roman power and traditions did not vanish overnight. Latin remained the language of administration, Roman law and coinage persisted, and successor kingdoms drew heavily on Roman models of governance and military organization. Italy, Gaul, Hispania, and North Africa came under the control of groups such as the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Vandals, and later the Franks, who both disrupted and assimilated Roman traditions. Rather than a sudden collapse, the Migration Period marked a protracted transformation, blending imperial legacies with emerging medieval political and cultural structures that would define Western Euroasia’s future.

Hot take: Deltarune feels like a weaker game than Undertale. ralsei-splat

    Deltarune gameplay/design criticism re: fandom

I think Toby Fox plays too much into fandom with Deltarune in a way that he didn’t do with Undertale. The obvious stinker is the changing of the weird route scene in chapter 4 through a hasty hotpatch and then to a different animation. There was nothing wrong with the original depiction; the weird route had been very explicitly about removing someone’s ability to consent through ludonarrative elements. The game is written so that multiple warnings are given before this scene and the scene itself is incredibly intense and requires consistent player input.

Another one is the problem of difficulty in Deltarune, the fact being, there isn’t a difficulty curve at all. Fox has stated he wants the main storyline of the game to be as accessible as possible but he’s also eager to please people. People who could not beat the chapter 5 final boss on day 1 of the game’s release should NOT be listened to as an arbiter of game balance. However, Fox decides to implement an invisible difficulty slider that makes the fight far more forgiving. Then for Mad Mew Mew, months after the chapter releases, it seems like Fox made a decision and decided to make a optional secret boss have an “easy mode” for which there is no penalty/benefit.

It definitely feels like Deltarune suffers from being too successful and garnering a large fanbase before the game is completed which in turn influences/pressures the game designers to fit fan expectations and comfort. It leans too much forward being a visual novel that disguises itself as an RPG but really wants to deconstruct it as much as possible, especially considering how you can skip chapters which is unheard of for RPGs.

I have a lot of story criticism but I feel like it’s more subjective compared to the game design that’s more easily pointed out, but I do have gripes with Deltarune’s story. kris-dubois

its so weird how you can post a picture of pretty much any amerikkkan president ever and nobody would care but if you post lenin or stalin or whatever people come out of the woodworks being like “erm can we not post this guy here” like they are the boogieman even though any amerikkkan president is infinitely times worse lol

the cognitive dissonance is so strange to me

So many people make posts hating on “Amazon Basics” femboy outfits (and I do understand the criticism) but I’ve never seen anyone post “here’s a cute outfit and exactly where to buy it”. I have no idea what I’m doing so I don’t even know where to start.

i keep trying to play the new star wars game but god it is so vapid. You can literally transplant an entirely different IP (dragon age, LOTR, Harry Potter) into this game and the story beats and dialogue would be 1:1. Got to the part where you get your first jedi and i think i’m calling it done.
