It doesn’t bother me at all, if someone asks for a seat, for any reason.

But it should also be understood that they have a right to say no, and you have no right to bitch about it.

I was that way over a decade ago when seat selection didn’t require extra payment. Nowadays, nope, if I paid extra for a aisle or window seat, you’re not getting it without a equivalent trade.

Exactly. Although I’m reserving judgement all around because I have no idea what happened. Why was the child crying? Did they offer to pay the difference in fare? Why is this woman the only one that can switch? There are very few situations in which the woman would be judged inappropriate though.

Freedom of speech is a law regulating actions the government can take against you for saying what you want.

This is a discussion about etiquette, in other words how we behave toward eatchother in a society.

If you start referring to freedom of speech laws in normal conversation you have already breached the rules of etiquette, while at the same time displayed your ignorance of how freedom of speech works.

In this case the etiquette invites the person to shut the fuck up after being told no in a polite manner, while the law allows the person to bitch about it. Then we have to consider the rules of the airline, what do they say about swapping places?

Personally I would have no issues changing seats given three conditions:

        1. The new seat is equal in comfort to my old seat, I am a fat guy (dealing with it) and I will not sit next to another fat guy.
        2. There is space in the overhead locker for my bag.
        3. I have not paid extra for my seat, if I had I’d expect some compensation for giving up the added value I paid for.

Yeah, I don’t understand why the window seat was even a requirement unless that’s what the child was crying about. And if that’s the case, I’m 100% saying “no” with a grin.

Airlines usually have an empty row for medical and discomfort situations. On domestic, it’s usually back-right three seats. So if you pick the aisle seat on the back-left, you can move over after takeoff and have the entire row to yourself unless, on the odd occassion (never happened to me), they’re needed.

I call it my upper-economy class.

I had to go to a funeral with an autistic toddler, it was hell but we got through it by preparing for it. Toys he’d never seen before helped the most. We also got treats and apologies for the seats near us and the crew. People are a lot more likely to help you if you’re nice about it.

I think filming individual people and then uploading it isn’t even legal in Europe?

      • Most European carriers (including KLM, Lufthansa, Air France, Transavia, and Ryanair) explicitly state in their conditions of carriage or safety announcements that capturing other passengers or crew members on video without consent is forbidden. One instance they actually used the PA system to say to not record other passengers. As far as I’ve seen, it’s not heavily enforced as long as you’re doing holiday pics but the moment somebody starts harassing someone else with recording they turn on the harasser.

It’s a bit of a grey area. Filming in public places is generally allowed, but an airplane isn’t really a public space in the same sense, since you need a ticket to enter. I guess it would also depend on the airline’s terms and conditions.

In Germany it is also allowed to film. However, if you directly film individual people then you are not allowed to publish that without consent. And I’d think that applies anywhere.

The law in many countries is actually pretty complicated.

It’s usually legal to film in public and to get people in your scene as long as they are incidental to the filming - they can’t expect total privacy as it’s public.

But if someone is aggressively recording, or doing so when it’s clear the person does not want to be recorded, that may be considered as harassment or otherwise illegal.

The carelessness and entitlement is endemic, I guarantee that many criticizing her would make the exact same decision in her shoes.

Empathy is not giving a family of entitled brats what they want to avoid friction, it’s putting yourself in others shoes and trying to relate honestly. If I’m her, I tell them no politely. If I’m them, I explain to my child the reality of the situation and accept the answer.

It’s easy to see who’s in the wrong here, shockingly it’s the one who would film someone and put them on blast for a reasonable, if disappointing answer.

    Hope she wins.

I’ve traveled with our kids when they were little. It sucks. Sometimes we’d have to beg a passenger if they would mind swapping…90% did, they didn’t want to be next to a kid, and we always offered to buy them drinks, snack boxes or whatever as thanks.

Sometimes we just had to suck it up and deal with being where the seats were. That’s how it goes when you can only afford the cheap seats that don’t let you pick the seat (fuck unbundling) thanks to the fare class.

Shaming a passenger out of a seat they paid for? IDK how that’s even on anyone’s radar. Slander, libel, defamation, whatever, hope she shuts down the fools that filmed her.

If I travel with children, I assume the cost of seat reservations needs to be included, if they are of an age where I need to sit with them, which is most ages up to adulthood depending on the person.

Expecting to count on the generosity of others because you didn’t pay for two seats is unacceptable behaviour.

Personally I think it should be waived if travelling with children though. In fact, seat reservations should just be part of flying but I’m showing my age.

You got it. Sometimes you book late and don’t have the luxury of seats together and then sometimes you DO have to rely on the kindness of others. We had to go to a funeral once and there were four seats on our flight but no 2 together which doesn’t really work with kids under 5 but over 2.

Usually someone is generous, sometimes people are assholes about it, but never would I say “yo, give my kid your window seat”.

Depending on the length of the flight, I wouldn’t want to be in a seat between a kid and the aisle because I din’t want to have to get up every time they and their adult have to pee.

Conversely, I’ve been in a position where I was in the window seat next to two parents and their sleeping newborn. I held it as long as I could, but that kid did not go back to sleep after I asked them to get up so I could pee.

Next time you’re parked in by a newborn and have to pee just ask the parents for an empty bottle to piss in. They should have one or two floating around.
