I did janitorial work for a summer kids thing by my local library. One day I found out that some kid broke a soap dispenser. They were cheap ones and it looked like an accident. Soap all over one small corner. No idea how long its been there that day. So I leave the bathroom, go to the woodshop (for older teens) and steal their shop vac. I dumped the sawdust into the soap mess and swept up chunks of it. What was left i easily mopped. Left that corner clean as a whistle afterwards.

People say “carpets are great, you just need to have them professionally cleaned every couple of years” and I imagine only mopping my floors once every couple of years and throw up in my mouth a little

Yet Americans will walk inside with their shoes on all the time, if you go by what’s down on TV and in movies. Even if you take off your shoes, the feet are dirty af, it’s still nasty af to have carpet indoors. So gross.

I mean to be honest I couldn’t really imagine what you see in culture media to be very close to reality, because these sick fucks on my TV are putting their shoes up in their couch and bed and shit. That’s just insane.

Still though, only 70%?! It’s still way too low.

There are also people who have “house shoes” which may be slippers or actual shoes that they only wear around the house.

I don’t know how common it is.

That’s the beauty of free will. Everyone has different preferences and tastes and can apply those in their own home.

Remember, judging others doesn’t define who they are, it defines who you are.

It seems to be a generational thing from what I read in Wikipedia, older people from UK and Netherlands for example didn’t remove shoes but younger generations do. The US is a big mix of cultures so I’m guessing people that came here from all over some didn’t remove shoes but people from other places do, and as we go more people are removing shoes because it makes sense.

Also most people I know have switched to hard floors over carpet as well. For example when we got our home we removed all the carpet but the bedroom

Professionally cleaned? Fuck that. My carpets are fine without that and its much more pleasant to walk on than floor boards.

I’d probably be OK with very large rugs instead but they seem to generally cost more. Tempted to add rugs on top of carpets though. Cosy and nice on my feet. Probably helps insulation a bit and they dampen sound quite a lot too.

Anyone who’s ever removed a carpet knows that vacuums dont do much.

There’s probably more “you” in the form of shed skin in your carpet than there is actual you.

So if you ever get your place recarpeted, it’s worth the money for the thicker layer of insulation. It is just so much softer to walk on, and maybe provides a tiny amount of padding in a fall.

Sometimes if my bed feels wrong for reasons, I can sleep on that extra plush carpet no problems.

I set up a spare bedroom as an office, so my rolly chair goes on one of those plastic carpet protection mats. I hate those mats so I put another carpet on top of it. Chair rolls great, it’s not ugly visible plastic, and it’s really easy to clean up spills right there.

There is an underlay on the carpet. I don’t know what the options were for it as that is just what they provided. So no idea how it compares to different sorts but at least there is one.

Yeah office chair on carpet isn’t great and also using a plastic mat which seems to at least help but it bends a fair bit, I do wonder if it would be better to have a more rigid material below it, even just a sheet of plywood. Putting an offcut of carpet on top could be nice. Although at that point I doubt the plastic is even necessary. Ohh, maybe plywood and those stick on squares of carpet? I think they are good for office flooring too so they don’t wear as badly.

For a while we have considered getting some rugs but they do cost a lot. Also want a combination of lots of squish AND a nice fluffy feel to it. Often they don’t do both very well. Fake sheepskins feel nice but are almost completely flat of you squeeze them. Foam ones are very squishy but no fluff to them at all. Maybe need to look at multi laying it.

Or do I need to look into getting a sheet of the thickest carpet underlay I can and 50 balls of yarn to make my own rug that is better than all the others? Pompom rug could be an option too. Make them a few at a time then so it is easier to break up the work while watching something.

            it bends a fair bit

that was our problem. we had to get the thickest plastic mat because the ones specifically for office carpet are flexible as fuck. a thin sheet of plywood (we have a few pianos and soft “hardwood” floors what get grooves in them when you drag a piano across them, and a thin sheet of plywood protects the wood from the piano. i imagine the same plywood would work great for this if you could get at least > 1.5m x 1.5m sheet. it was just easier to get the plastic.

We have a carpet shampooer. It cost less than the cleaners would have charged. Gets used every other year unless we lend it to someone (then like once a year).

The hard part of deep cleaning carpets is moving the furniture off it so it can dry, not the actual cleaning.

If you completely cleaned your carpet after 10 vacuums and 5 passes with the carpet shampooer… Then removed a small square… You could take that square out outside and shake half a kilogram of filth out of it.

I mean, that is a bit weird. Drizzling soap onto something just binds the dirt, it doesn’t actually remove it.

Like, yeah, the rest of the carpet doesn’t exactly look clean, but maybe it did do some chemical reaction beyond cleaning the carpet…

Well, yeah, that is my assumption, too, because you’d at least try to clean up the shampoo. But I don’t know, I also wouldn’t expect this to be terribly successful…? Don’t you need a specific vacuum cleaner to actually get the dirt out of carpets?

Edit: I guess, maybe it would work with a short-haired carpet like that…

Jokes aside, if soap pulls pigment from your fabric, there’s no backsies. You have to dye, cover, or just accept it.
