Unfortunately i think we’re at a point where even a dinosaur-killing level asteroid wouldn’t fully wipe us out. Like there are people in Cheyenne mountain 24/7 which iirc is designed to withstand a direct nuke hit and has supplies to last for years, including food, energy, and oxygen. And after that life would be a massive struggle, but if any life survived after that then we would probably survive too

Oddly Satisfying@lemmy.world•Removed a cable that had been wrapped around a tree for about fifteen years
13·4 天前I only know a tiny bit about trees, but i think the answer is basically never. Only the very outer layer of a tree grows, so the parts that were constricted during that year’s growth will stay permanently that shape forever.
Cosmetically I’d guess the bark might grow in to fill the gap, but that’s just a pure guess

Science@slrpnk.net•Brain scans reveal opposite reward responses in ADHD and autism
121·4 天前A biological scan to determine if a person has adhd or autism would be fantastic. Currently the diagnoses are based on subjective questionings that are very open to interpretation and often vary widely by the individual who’s administering the testing. I’ve heard horror stories of people having to fight to get a diagnosis even though it’s obvious that they have the condition.
Ah i got them mixed up, good catch. Still he had the entire calendar named after him.
In fact the entire calendar
is(edit: was) named after him

111·4 天前Nonsense, that’s like saying if you commit crimes in gta then you’ll commit crimes in real life

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Sony Seemingly Ends VR Ambitions by Selling Patents to Meta
35·5 天前It’s a smart move by sony. Apple, google, and meta all spent zillions of dollars on vr/ar development, and yet all of them didn’t get significant consumer uptake, and all of them don’t see profit even on a remotely envisionable horizon. So it seems very smart to get out of that market, especially now while you can still get back a lot of money from selling your patents

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are fluctuations in Earth's magnetic field during geomagnetic storms actually enough to cause stress on our cells and bodies, or am I encountering junk science?
15·6 天前That is very clearly a NOT reputable source. A reputable source on a scientific topic will almost NEVER be a site that’s entirely about a single highly specific topic and be painting it all negatively or all positively.

Games@lemmy.world•Australia says platforms like Steam and Roblox have 'significant' child safety gaps
9·8 天前Look at her picture, based on her apparent age i doubt that’s correct
EDIT
Yeah i looked her up on Wikipedia, and while it doesn’t say her age explicitly, the pic there makes it clear that she didn’t use the internet when she was a kid

1·13 天前iirc they still were flying in the 80s
Wait what? You don’t even have a septic tank? It all just pours right into the ground?!

Technology@lemmy.world•NASA mysteriously trying to pull world’s fastest plane, SR-71 Blackbird, out of retirement — and won’t say why
11·14 天前Close but not quite, it stands for strategic reconnaissance. It’s not stealth. Stealth technology didn’t come into existence until the late 80s early 90s
If a story has prominent fictional science, then it’s science fiction. FTL travel, freezing people in carbonite and reviving them, midichlorians, etc etc etc, - Star Wars is definitely science fiction.

TenForward: Where Every Vulcan Knows Your Name@lemmy.world•What is your favorite uniform, and why is it Star Trek: The Motion Picture?
2·20 天前It’s odd to me that OP assumed people would prefer that drab boringness. If people liked it then the producers would’ve kept using that aesthetic

Well, yes and no. It’s good to order new food! But if you gave it a fair chance and still don’t like it then you shouldn’t force it down your throat
