  • Oh gosh oh fuck my spoon bluff has been called and this is a topic too important to me to just not reply >w< (I’m fine just berry tire :3)

Did u know fruit bats don’t just eat fruit but many species also drink nectar and cuz of this they’re also important pollinators? They also assist a lot in seed dispersion in many ecosystems cuz of their massive appetite (they are some of the largest flying mammals on Earth) and wide ranges and can consume several times their body weight in fruit and nectar in a single day. Cuz their diet is so water rich already, it might not be necessary for a fruit bat to seek out a dedicated water source but when they do, like on hot days, they like to fly over a body of water and just graze the surface with their wings or their bellies and land somewhere and just lick the water off off of themselves :3

(I couldn’t find a video on short notice but I did find this pic of what looks like a Indian flying fox for u which arguably shows them directly drinking water too but yknow >w<, see my statement about the great variety of fruit bat species later)

They also have surprisingly long lifespans, like up to several decades in captivity

There’s so much variety in fruit bat species (there are almost 200 species in the family Pteropodidae) that it can be hard to talk about them in general and many species have such wide ranges and live so remote that ppl don’t know much about them…

On the other paw, some fruit bats have such restricted ranges (like one part of one island in an island chain or smth) and are so highly specialized for their particular environmental niche that they can be very cool ecological case studies (if u can ever meet one :3) but also rly vulnerable to habitat disruption. Like the small white-winged flying fox or the Fijian monkey-faced bat
