Watch as the media never covers this. This goes against the popular narrative.
He didn’t even know how to swim…
Though he did not know how to swim, Cundiff jumped into the near-freezing water and reached the stroller, keeping the baby above the surface while he struggled to tread water. The Tribune reports that bystanders threw him a flotation device and helped pull both Cundiff and the child safely to shore.
Talk about burying the lead on this. What a totally amazing heroic act.
Holy shit, he must have jumped in knowing he would not be able to save himself, just to give the baby a chance of surviving. If bystanders hadn’t gotten him the flotation device in time, neither would have made it. What a remarkable thing to do.
Yeah for sure. I cannot confidently say I would have done the same especially in Lake Michigan in winter and I am a pretty strong swimmer. I like to think I would though.
Just knowing how to swim is not enough, I just looked up the weather report and assuming the article was published the day after the incident, the high temp for the 25th was fucking just shy of 30F
So this dude dove into a freezing Lake Michigan without knowing how to swim without hesitation. On top of that Lake Michigan is not just a lake, it has fucking surf https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVMmX7aiBFe/
Yeah I was gonna say even if you know how to swim when your chest gets enveloped by cold water you will likely forget how to swim for an few seconds unless you have experienced cold water shock before. It’s a very disorienting sensation that can kill people.
He also was presumably clothed. I’m a fairly strong swimmer (and, uh, naturally buoyant) but clothed, in cold fresh water, I would have really struggled.
Dancing on the razors edge between heroism and irresponsible recklessness. Dudes rock, hope he recovers okay.
Positive masculine role model right here
Absolute badass. Can’t swim? Fuckit, save the kid. Peak wholesomeness in terms of self-sacrifice
Chicago stay winning
