Oh no, a soc dem has to fulfill a campaign promise! I’m sure everyone who supported him over Cuomo will try to hold him to this very explicit promise.

Mind you, I did and still support his mayorship over an explicit neoliberal, though that’s more so because I think people in the US need to experience the process of movement building and pitfalls of social democracy if they are to evolve their understanding. I went through the demsoc phase years ago, and can be patient with others who are doing the same now.

That being said, an important distinction to be made is that you still need to actually critique the socdem in order to expose their inadequacy. Something many of his support base have yet to understand, still enamored by institutional legitimacy.

Regardless, I imagine this will be an opportunity as a learning experience once Mamdani most likely folds on his promise.

If he actually tries to fulfill it, I’d be quite surprised, but I doubt it will happen.
