Here in the States, AI romance is one of the few AI services common shlubs will pay for. Most users only use their free token allotment. Otherwise it’s businesses that buy tokens and drive AI profits.

And US AI offerings are still plummeting into debt, so any service that makes money is welcome. So far, AI workforce replacement costs more than human workers (by far) and does a poorer job most of the time. Hence Doctorow’s notion of a reverse centaur, the human employee that checks the machine’s work (rather than the machine checking and augmenting human work).

Also here in the States we have a culture war. Manosphere men (Incels, MGTOW, seduction culture, alpha males, etc.) vote Republican, so influencers get infused with billionaire money. But women (even conservative women) find them insufferable. The battle of the sexes, like the war against trans folk, immigrants and libs serves to distract people away from class consciousness.

Zoomers are not having sex compared to prior generations at the same age, and an AI companion might be a serviceable substitute. They were already taking on waifus anyway.

The affordability crisis, poor job growth and poorer upward mobility also informs the lowest fertility rate in US history (below 1.6 which some think is critical). To be fair, US fertility has been below replacement for decades, and we made it up with immigration.

And it’s the ownership class most frightened by depopulation. Curiously they keep making policy decisions that are downright anti-natal.

A lot of those girls were hidden or otherwise, kept off the books from the Chinese government. Not actually that hard in the more rural areas. Not that that excuses the Chinese government’s polices, but the families of those girls weren’t all that depraved. Lot of of adult women suddenly started materializing out of nothing for college.

It’s been years, so citing my source is hard, but I’ll see what I can find.

      edit: https://news.ku.edu/news/article/2016/11/22/study-finds-chinas-missing-girls-theory-likely-far-overblown

…have analyzed statistics and found that a combination of late registration and unreported births explains a larger portion of the “missing girls” than previously reported in Chinese sex-ratio-at-birth statistics. Their findings are published this month in the journal China Quarterly.

The researchers believe local government officials informally worked with farmers and acknowledged that they couldn’t fully enforce the one-child policy. Instead they made tacit agreements in allowing families to have extra children in exchange for social stability in their communities. The cadres, or local governments, would then under-report “out of plan” births that ultimately influenced the national population statistics.

There was also abortions happening and infanticide probably trails behind that. Not great, but not as bad as is passed around. People probably aren’t having kids in China for the same reason they’re not having kids everywhere else. Despite what we hear, people in China are either too poor or too busy with work.

“Male loneliness” aka “I’ve been raised to think that patriarchy works and that I deserve a bunch of shit without reason. Why is the world so mean to me?” Meanwhile, everyone is lonely because capitalists made it cost money to see people and no one’s got any of that.

Dude, I’m 6’4", over weight, have AuDHD, and resting bitch face. Do you think I don’t have the same lived experience as you? I lived until I was in my mid 20s like the world perceived me as a monster. I’m telling you that it isn’t a male loneliness problem, it’s a loneliness problem and your ego can’t or won’t let you see past the parts of that that directly impact you.

Lonely man here. I’ve been raised to think that every man are pervert and women keep getting catcalled and harassed in the street. I’m so ashamed of myself that I just cannot approach a woman without thinking I will annoy her and will be rejected no matter what I try. So I just… don’t.

I understand people using LLM for romance. I don’t use it because of big corps. But If I had a fully local, fast, LLM, I think I would also use it.

That’s another example. People are just people. If you interact with them, you’ll be shocked to find that most of them have just as complicated relationship with the world as you do. You don’t need to be afraid that everyone views you as a monster because of your gender. They don’t. They won’t trust you initially cause we live in a time of low trust (most interactions you have are people trying to get one over on you, because of the anonymity of the interaction). All that it takes to get over that is more interactions with the same people. Then you’ll be more confident in other interactions with strangers going forward.

Sorry uh … in less ‘online speak’…

People who basically never leave their room/apartment and masturbate like it’s going out of style.

Hikikomori is basically the Japanese word for a person who literally never goes outside, never socializes in person … ‘gooning’ is now a verb for masturbating.

Ah yes, those people are totally start going out and fucking as much as possible. It’s not like that is a symptom of a more general social issue that has been getting worse way before LLMs were popular. And it is also not that people will develop relationships with all sorts of inanimate objects and concepts to cope with reality. The problem was just the AI guys, yay pat yourself in the back

    • Just the same as many folks falling on hard time grab for booze and/or other substances to get to their day. People I general don’t become poor by doing drugs first. But that would mean admitting society has structural issues that are most likely very profitable to a small minority.

LLMs are horrible at a lot of things, but this is one area where they excel i’d guess. The things are trained on volumes upon volumes of spicy fanfic and roleplay chats posted for free online. They can probably cater to kinks that I don’t even know exist. Because the lonely aren’t seeking objective responses the hallucinations aren’t as obvious.

Not that it’s a good thing that they are okay at this though. I’d hate to find out a person got LLM induced psychosis from their fake AI gf.

LLMs have yet to enter the monetization process where the models get bogged down with ads for pepsi or whatever.

States don’t have rights at all, rights are for people. But, the purpose of a state is to make society livable and sustainable. There is likely a benefit to society in mitigating the use of parasocial relationships with chat bots as a substitute for actual interpersonal relationships.

I think there is benefit to society in creating alternatives to parasocial relationships with chat bots.

Until then, I see this as somewhat analogous to fighting ADHD by banning Adderall. Yeah, the drugs aren’t good for you, but the lack of them is worse.
