This made some kind of sense (but not much) when Russian import ammo was cheap, now it’s just a deformed oddity

I guess now that no ammo is cheap you might as well reload anyway… x39 does have some benefits over 5.56 within it’s effective range as well

I think if you’re already committed to reloading, why not just build the gun for a caliber that fits its default architecture better? I don’t think 300 blackout is particularly great but if I’m reloading I’d go that direction before x39 for an AR

Definitely nice to have that original bolt face and AR mags, but people do keep making .220 based rounds for that sweet case capacity…

Sweet! What barrel length and what’s your favourite load? Do you have plans to reload 7.62x39 at some point?

5.45 AR-15, taken to the next level

The 5.45 AR seems like the worst attributes of both weapons combined, weak boltface, expensive ammo, light bullets but without significant speed

The salespage from the arms company webbedsite (I forget which) implies that it’s for nato operators behind former-warsaw-pact lines… dunno how viable a use case that is.

The cool thing about spec ops is that they have a practical use case for everything! Or at least they say they do.

In addition to comrade koi’s comment, the AK magazines/7.62x39 combination offer more reliability compared to other designs which use a redesigned AR mag and cartridges such as 6.5 Grendel.

As civilian-legal fully automatic firearms continue to proliferate across the USA, more shooters are realising that a setup that is reliable in semi auto is not necessarily so in full auto and military systems are usually better in this regard

Did something happen with the NFA?

Sort of. Some years ago “forced-reset” triggers were legalized. These are legally distinct from full auto but functionally the same, kind of like “pistol braces” vs stocks for barrels <16". Cheap versions of this machine have proliferated widely and can be purchased for as little as $45 or printed at home.

Light, accurate and modular like AR15 plus hard thumping wall piercing Kalashnikov round, best of both worlds

There’s also a niche online where people like to build these as little compact fireball-throwing backpack blasters because unlike the 5.56, the 7.62 does not require a full length barrel to get up to speed.
