    I was a 90’s kiddo and I still resent having to carry around a phone everywhere. Everybody expects to know where you are at all times. I still remember a phone conversation I had once when I was in grade school.

    RING RING

    me: hullo?

    them: Is your sister there?

    me: no

    them: Do you know where she went?

    me: no

    them: Do you know when she’ll be back?

    me: no

    them: ALL RIGHT YOU LITTLE SHIT YOU BETTER TELL HER I CALLED OR IMA KICK YOUR ASS THE NEXT TIME I SEE YOU

      i remember those days. “i called over there but it’s busy… they must be on the internet.” because if you didn’t dial *67 before the number, call waiting would still be active, and when somebody called the “boop” would boot you off the cool warez chat you were on.

    I’ve wasted so much time and money on LinkedIn for such little gain.

    In terms of job search, I’ve only ever gotten 1 job from it and iirc 1 interview. Maybe it’s just not great for someone with my lower level of experience but I have had much better time on Indeed without any of the extra chafe.

    In terms of networking? Utterly worthless lol? I have over 400 connections and they all might as well be bots. Which higher up establishes connections and maintains their network online? It’s a site made for HR fucks and recruiters who don’t really do any recruiting. I’m convinced nobody who is active on LinkedIn does any meaningful work. It’s just a status symbol for midlevel careerists who like to project some kind of worth

      Correct, lol. LinkedIn has been useful for me because people can find my publications and credentials if they are interested. I’m done explaining myself to people 🤷‍♀️

      I get three types of messages on LinkedIn:

      • people wanting me to hire them
      • people who want career advice
      • the most useless recruiters who are clearly not familiar with my field

      All actual useful networking comes from industry associations.

      disclosure, i’m not on linkedin and never made an account. however, the only person i have ever met professionally that is described by others as “highly active on linkedin” has pretty much a political figurehead job and they’re just doing like promotional sort of work among professional associations.
