Old but still relevant and true. “But there’s a reason. There’s a reason. There’s a reason for this, there’s a reason education SUCKS, and it’s the same reason it will never, ever, EVER be fixed. It’s never going to get any better, don’t look for it, be happy with what you’ve got. Because the owners, the owners of this country don’t want that. I’m talking about the real owners now, the BIG owners! The Wealthy… the REAL owners! The big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians. They are irrelevant. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice! You have OWNERS! They OWN YOU. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought, and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying, to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I’ll tell you what they don’t want: They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interests. Thats right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don’t want that! You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shitty jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you sooner or later cause they own this fucking place! It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it! You, and I, are not in the big club. By the way, it’s the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head with their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. The table has tilted folks. The game is rigged and nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care! Good honest hard-working people; white collar, blue collar it doesn’t matter what colour shirt you have on. Good honest hard-working people continue, these are people of modest means, continue to elect these rich cock suckers who don’t give a fuck about you….they don’t give a fuck about you… they don’t give a FUCK about you. They don’t care about you at all… at all… AT ALL. And nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care. That’s what the owners count on. The fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick that’s being jammed up their assholes everyday, because the owners of this country know the truth. It’s called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it. George Carlin

No, capital has the means to enact the legal system. If, for arguments sake, we had perfect legal systems where legal representation was free, everyone would be protected equally. To be clear, I’m not proposing any particular solution, just being nitpicky in that “that’s how any legal system protects anything” isn’t correct - there clearly are possible systems that aren’t imbalanced.

Here’s a reminder that wage theft accounts for nearly 75% of all theft. It’s literally larger than every other form of theft combined, and then multiplied by almost three.

If you walked into a convenience store and blatantly stole a $2 candy bar at the same time every single day, they’d have a cop waiting for you by the end of the week. But if that same convenience store chain steals $2 in wages from each of their 5000 employees every single day, then that is just good business.

Part of the issue is that lots of people seem to think “my employer didn’t pay my check” is the only form of wage theft. In reality, wage theft typically happens via a thousand tiny things. Things like unpaid breaks that still require work. Unfair time clock rounding that shaves a fraction of an hour off of every employee’s clock in/clock out times. Managers requiring employees to show up early, and then not allowing them to clock in until their shift is scheduled to begin. Employers automatically deducting an hour of time for meal breaks, (for “convenience”) even if the employee was working during that time and got a shorter break. Employers requiring employees to clock out at the scheduled end of their shift to avoid overtime, then requiring those employees to finish their closing tasks while clocked out. Requiring employees to “always be on-call” but refusing to pay them an on-call fee when they take work calls while clocked out.

And those are just a few examples. All of those minor things quickly add up to massive amounts of stolen wages. For the employees, it is death by a thousand cuts. No single infraction is large enough to sue over, and no individual employee is going to bother going to court over $2 in unpaid wages. But when the company is doing it at scale, it means every employee is being paid less, which leads to massive illegal profits for the employer.

We should be at the point where RTO orders for positions that could be remote should also be considered a form of wage theft. Instead, we’re at a point where every hour, your employer steals what you get paid per day.

If employers had to pay employees for their commute time, that would be the end of RTO.

Maybe. I still don’t understand the economics of making people come in to work when the companies have to pay rent on the spaces where employees work.

That is only the case if you’re the CEO of a small mom and pops business. Then oh boy, the state makes sure you’re responsible, to show the people they hold CEOs accountable for their behavior (read: they close shops for small accounting mistakes they forgive big corporations to “save workplaces”). If you even manage to get to that point, and not just being prematurely shot down with “why don’t you just work hard at <insert corporation name here> to climb the rank ladder to CEOdom?” and cost of entry into forming your own business.

CEOs exist to execute the decisions of the board. In a capitalist system the decisions can often be boiled down to “siphon surplus value to shareholders instead of letting the people who produce it to retain it.”

In a socialist system where the workers have a controlling majority of the board, you still need someone to execute the decisions of the board. Or are you suggesting that a worker owned company doesn’t need any top leader beyond the board?

I mean, we have the technology to make direct democracy work, but even with representative democracy, there’s no need for a single leader. There are many examples of functioning anarchic organizations. I’m not really imagining one ideal way to organize enterprises, there are many ways to do it. Hell, you could even do it with a single elected leader, but it wouldn’t be functionally the same as a CEO. In a socialist workplace, the leader wouldn’t have absolute authority nor be payed an outrageously unequal wage. The workers would elect them and be able to recall them.

That’s where I will disagree a bit. “Owners” usually have a CEO or something similar to run the company in their stead. Imagine you employ someone, he fucks up big time and you go to prison, despite having done nothing wrong. That’s horrendous. That’s like hiring a tax accountant, he fucks up and you go to prison for it … oh wait, that’s how it works in many countries, but anyways, that’s fucking shit and shouldn’t be a thing.

If the owner has had any influence on the company that have led to this decision, he should absolutely get punished aswell. But if he had nothing to do with it, nah. I feel like that would be cruel and unjust.

These guys are killing people. It’s like employing a psychopathic security guard who shoots people at best, or playing dumb about hiring a hit man at worst. Insulating owners from the consequences of their choices has been horrendous.

The pic above is criminal negligence, and the CEO was hired to do it.

and the CEO was hired to do it.

Yes, and the CEO is hired to keep an eye on everything that happens in the company. That’s his job. Not the owners at this point. The owner doesn’t tell the CEO to employ psychopathic people (unless he does excplicity, ofc). He tells the CEO: “Here’s your monthly salary, don’t fuck it up” and that’s it. Every further responsibility is with the CEO.

Insulating owners from the consequences of their choices

But hiring the wrong people isn’t the owners choice. The owner doesn’t make any choices anymore, otherwise he would be the CEO and not employ someone to run the business in their stead.

What the fuck is your problem? Jesus you think everything is a challenge to your identity. You are tilting at windmills you idiot. How many libertarians voted for Kamala and support the DSA, including donating and voting for DSA candidates? I have my copy of Capital on my kitchen table literally right now, right next to a giant collection of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon essays titled “Property is Theft!”, surely the mark of a libertarian. A libertarian who reads The Conquest of Bread by Kropotkin… okay… Imagine being as wrong and stupid as you are.

I was literally just saying LLCs are a thing. They limit liability. You can’t make LLC CEOs suffer as much as you want because of what Limited Liability does. You have to change what Limited Liability means to achieve your goals. Sorry you have challenges. l

I guess that means I’m a libertarian? Maybe if you’re a fucking idiot you have that logic and consider that libertarian rhetoric.

Linited Liability makes it so the CEO of Activision faces no accountability from the government when he caused his employees to kill themselves. Or the CEO of BP suffering consequences after those oil spills. Or the CEOs of for profit private prisons being held responsible for all of the illegal activities done inside the prisons. But they arent. That’s not a libertarian opinion you fucking moron. That’s a fact of life. Get your shit together the next time you comment.
