You LAMINATED your Toilet Paper Card? That means you CANT Vote!
-Republicans!
I signed mine back when I was like 6 years old and had just learned my signature. It looks nothing like my signature now some 50 years later. ID my foot…
I laminated mine. Staples did not warn me not to and just did it. since the minimum sheet was 8x10 i asked anyone in line if they needed anything laminated, no other soc cards, but a few took me up on it for other things.
Only the DMV ever gave a shit that it was lamindated, and it wasn’t a no, it was just a you’re not supposed to do that and then they accepted it.
I’m not saying you should laminate it, you should not, but mostly placed DGAF
I have to restrain myself when someone tells me I have to follow some trivial arbitrary stupidity while the people who make those rules commit the most heinous crimes right in front of our faces while laughing about it.
“Well DMV person, I actually do know that it’s ‘not allowed’ and I knew it when I did it too. For you see, I do not give a single fuck about what I’m allowed or not allowed to do with a shitty little piece of paper that I own. So either accept it or don’t.”
Good luck with going back to the DMV after you wait in the line for social security to get a new card :)
Imagine living in a country that calls itself a first world country but doesn’t even issue ID cards to its citizens lol
If they gave us ID cards they’d have to let everyone vote who had one.
Can’t have that.
We have to demand ID and simultaneously make it have a time and fianancial cost in order to get one.
That’s done by the individual states.
I don’t think many people realize what a kick-the-can-down-the-road kind of failure the SSN now is as a concept, since it’s also being used as a kind of national ID. It’s part of the reason why identity theft against US citizens just gets easier and easier.
Before the 1980s, it was common not to even have a SSN before the age of 15 or so, since it was originally only to be used for financial purposes. It was government action against tax fraud which ultimately made it common to get one assigned effectively from birth: eventually the feds required a SSN for any child over 2 years of age named as a dependent for tax purposes.
But you definitely should never be carrying the card around with you.
They want you to have that debt going as early as possible. I was in the red by middle school thanks to a family member using my number to write checks. Did it even matter that the number belonged to a little kid? Nope, go ahead and open that bank account and issue a check book!
Whooo boy that sounds like it must have been a lot of fun. Hope it turned out OK.
I honestly don’t even know where my card is. I just have the number memorized. Haven’t needed to show the actual card for anything in a very long time.
I lost that card in the ocean in 1987 and I haven’t had another one since
I’ve never carried mine around. In fact, it’s never been removed from the larger perforated card.
I thought I was looking at an unbaked tub of Leberkäs through a browned glass oven door.
Kids who played MTG had a huge advantage here.
My card stays in my locked fireproof box. How often does one need to provide their Social Security card in public life? A couple of times per year, if that? Such a stupid thing to keep on your person. Why laminate something that should be kept put away for safe keeping?
because it’s an important document that you must keep in safe keeping? it does not expire like a passport, and it the premiere document to validate your identity (even though it was specifically designed to not do that)
it’s one of three documents demanded of you to verify your identity for job applications, getting back on voter rolls when you are suspiciously removed or proving citizenship when ice arrests you under suspicion of being too brown, getting a drivers license, getting a passport, and replacing it is expensive, time consuming, and difficult to prove if you need it. the real question is what justifies NOT laminating it?
Exactly. My card is in near mint condition despite having it for 30+ years because I’ve had to physically pull it out maybe 3-4 times total in my life. Same goes for the birth certificate. A driver’s license is usually enough identity for jobs and whatnot in my experience. White privilege, I guess (which is ironic, because I’m more Mexican and Native American than white, but my skin is light so I get a pass).
just leave it in an envelope with your other important documents on file. i dont get why people carry it around
Have these people never had to take care of any sort of important document? Like how do you treat contracts or education certificates?
Education certificates? Those are mostly useless after you’ve got your first post-college job. And the majority of people have never and will never sign a contract where a paper copy will be required in the future.
Education certificates? Those are mostly useless after you’ve got your first post-college job.
I used to think this way, but apparently they can be kind of important if you’re planning on moving internationally.
Also, something I never really thought about until it happened to my friend, but universities do close down sometimes. So you might not always be able to get a new copy of your degree…
Not really. Most under-30’s these days have no experience or education in how or why to preserve important papers. It’s just not common these days.
Must be nice being so white you don’t have to worry about
ICErandom unidentified masked gangster thugs that beat you and kidnap you.I’ve never heard that advice and the only people I’ve ever known to carry it were white children
It’s useful when you’re opening a bank account but social security cards don’t have photos so cops don’t care. If you have a photo ID, the card is useless. If you only have the card, that’s useless, too.
To be fair, random unidentified masked gangster thugs can just remove your wallet and you’d be in even more trouble
Lol can you just put it in a hard plastic card collecting container? Like for Pokemon?

oh shit that guy ultra rare
Don’t be jealous of my holographic social security card, OK? I’m directly descended from George Washington
Nope, it’s an extremely nonstandard size because fuck you!
If only they made sleeves that size…
I’m not gonna post a link but “social security card sleeve” gave me plenty of cheap results
Sure pal… then the cheap sleve connects to wifi and sends your data to Chaina
I came here to say precisely this. Not that my parents did.
But when you change your name you get a new card. And mine is in one of these now.
it wasn’t meant to be a national ID, but states pushed against issuing one, so had to use the closest thing everyone gets
This. It’s a national ID on a de facto basis and is very ill-suited for it, and not just because it’s made of paper instead of plastic.
You can laminate it. It says not to, but you can do it anyway.
I did 30 years ago and it’s never been an issue
My birth certificate is printed on blue American money paper and says “the Commonwealth of Virginia” on it. Doesn’t mention America anywhere.
I moved to Australia when I was 13. When I tried to get my driver’s licence it was my only ID, along with a military ID that has a picture of me at 6 years old (passport was expired so they wouldn’t accept it). The woman at the department of transport was like “is this real?” and laughed. She had to Google it before they allowed it. Then passed it around to all her co-workers so they could take a look at the weird American birth certificate.
When it was given to me as an adult it had weird oil stain like drops all over it. No idea what my parents did to it lol.
weird American birth certificate
My mother was born and given up for adoption in a state that seals adoption records for 80 years. We found her birth family because her birth certificate had her birth name crossed out with a single pen line and her adopted name written in above it. We surmised that her birth middle and last names were actually her birth mother’s full name and since it was a rare last name we were easily able to find her in the 1930 census. This allowed us to locate her birth mother’s still-living sister. All went well, but this was certainly an egregious violation of the state’s adoption laws.
I had a passport once I kept in the topbox of my motorcycle during a camping trip. It also had a stick of butter in it for cooking. this went fine when the temperature was sub 20°C. On the return day it was hot as hell however. I pulled out my passport at the ferry and it was covered in butter. The desk lady was like, da fuck?
For laughs I picture this woman wasn’t American for some reason and just absolutely disgusted Americans stored their passports in butter
“heathens. you store passports in bearnaise”
wait, was the butter in the passport or just the topbox? still wrapped in wax paper or is that why it was in the passport?
