This seems like a good thing but I’m not well educated in this area. Are there any Brazilians here, or people who know a lot about Brazilian politics that can tell me if this will benefit the people of Brazil, or if this is a “both sides kinda suck and will submit to the ruling class eventually” kind of deal like we see with western countries? I am kind of skeptical of electoralism after being burned so many times in my own country, but maybe Brazil is different?

The big difference to western countries is that there was a meaningful geopolitical choice on the ballot: A BRICS nation defending its sovereignty or becoming a comprador-ran puppet like Argentina. That’s not comparable to people in the imperial core getting to pick between diet hitlerism and diet strasserism. It was terrifying to see how one LatAm government after the other fell to the US-backed fascists, i am relieved to see that a nation as big as Brazil has bucked that trend.

It’s good. But Brazil also elected the worst congress and senate in its history. Bolsonaro’s party won a third of the senate by themselves.

Lula’s 3rd term was marked with complete inefficiency. Capitulating to neoliberalism at every turn.

This 4th term will likely be his worst. I fear it will only foment an even larger response from fascism next time around. With a candidate that is less obviously a criminal lowlife.

There is hope. At least some communist heavyweights (like Humberto Matos, Elias Jabbour and Jones Manoel) were elected for the lower House. Also, the people is mobilized, and I at least will campaign on the streets and on the Internet to force Congress into action.

Recently the Right tried to amend the Constitution to prevent the police from investigating criminal politicians. They called it the “Prerogatives Amendment” (“PEC das Prerrogativas”). They voted it very quickly in the lower House. They voted even after midnight, which to me was a trick to prevent the people from protesting. It passed easily.

Then the people protested quite a bit. We nicknamed it “The Amendment of Crime” (“PEC da Bandidagem”). The Senate, afraid of the people, immediately shelved the amendment. It wasn’t event put to a vote.

      Popular pressure works.

Comrade I don’t want to harsh anyone’s buzz, but we all know (Jones Manoel included) that electing commies to a liberal democracy won’t do anything. Unless there is a violent break with the current form of government, no capitalist country will be “reformed”.

Hi. I second the other reply. Also, while I am a communist apprentice, I believe in Breno Altman, a brilliant Marxist-Leninist journalist. He is a Jew from a traditional anti-Zionist family. Two great-aunts volunteered to take arms against the Nazis. Both were martyred. His grandfather was so shocked by Khrushchev’s treasonous speech that he lost his sanity and took his life. Breno Altman is very highly knowledgeable and competent. His is committed to Marxism and existing socialism. He has interviewed President Miguel Díaz-Canel and was about to interview President Maduro when he was kidnapped.

He frequently and fiercely denounces Zionism. He wrote a book on it. He interviewed Hamas leaders. He gave an eulogy (here in Brazil) for comrade Ali Khamenei. He is under severe attack by the Zionist lobby and got a criminal conviction which would put him in prison. It was overturned.

Enough praise. Altman says that political power is important to accumulate forces. He criticizes the neoliberal aspects of Lula government but gives critical support.

the bigger point is how class consciousness and mass mobilization is at a high, and have been growing steadily for years. this election helps but is just the tip of the iceberg.

the other user mentioned the PEC da bandidagem protests as an example. another great one is how we are still winning on that work hours reduction amendment despite their best efforts to stop it dead.

Is way better than USA, the dispute was liberal vs comprador. Lula government can’t fix the problems but surely is better than the guy selling us out to the USA

What happened here in the last few weeks is historic. Never before have we mobilised so effectively against fascism.

Lula has a lot of problems. But today, we, the Brazilian people, made history together. We stopped the tide of fascism and showed that we are not pushovers. We are our own people and we will command our history

I thought the fascist dude would steal the election via CIA/Mossad fuckery, but seeing as how so many US vassals are already congratulating Lula, I guess they think (both) Bolsanaro(s) ain’t shit.

edit 2: little shit is already in the US, Juan Guaidó 2 is here

That can very well still happen.

The election window was extended by 2h, but that was done last minute, a lot of poling places had already closed. poll workers had gone home, and because our electronic voting machines are actually secure they cant simply be turned back on. So some places had more time to vote, this is already being used by the fascist as an excuse to place doubt on the process

      A few more details

      1. during the election cycle a supreme justice is appointed president of the supreme electoral court. This year it was a mega-bolsonarista (Kásisio Nunes , the terribly evangelical, Marques – KNM)
      2. a court order by the supreme court ordered free public transit throught the country with 100% of public transit fleet out and working
      3. a lot of places ignored 2 to do a little vote supression
      4. because of 3 and some incredibly heavy rains, the workers party asked for the extension. This has never happened. Voting is on sunday 8h to 17h and that’s it.
      5. because of the incredible rains, bolsonaristas asked for an extension in são paulo city
      6. KNM wasn’t issuing a decision
      7. at almost 17h a supreme justice ordered the extension (Zannin, appoited by Lula and his former lawyer)

since an extension is unheard of, and who did 7, the hogs are claiming election interference. To me, Zannin and PT fell for a trap with the extension, especialy it being last minute. An accidental trap, imo, but a trap no less

also, 4 years ago, the bolsonaristas spent oct-jan camping next to military HQs asking for a coulp, and did assult the capital. 2nd round of the elections is over, the “3rd” begins. I know that some elected commies have already started to organize a new “legality” movement to ensure Lula takes his seat.

the name is borrowed from a 1961 movement that avoided a coup, it was the closest we had been to a civil war in a long time, with the 3rd army mobilized for the resistance and other armies mobilizing agaist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_Campaign

edit: I got a couple justice hogs mixed up

A correction from a fellow Brazilian: the “terribly evangelical” Supreme Court justice is André Mendonça, also a bolsonarista, and also part of the Superior Electoral Court this year. The president of the Superior Electoral Court this year is Kassio Nunes Marques, a bolsonarista criminal, but not known for his religion.

Lula is a Left-Wing Socdem, he’s pro-palestine, he does have some neoliberal tedencies but he’ll protect Brazil’s rare minerals and amazon rainforest. He’s also really big in pro-workers rights and lgbtq+rights, like the woman who created the law that reduces the working schedule to 2x5, instead of 1x6, was a trans woman who is a close ally of Lula. Basically he save Brazil from being sold out. He’s also a historic figure who fought the military junta and basically helped topple the goverment (back then he was a radical pro-soviet union socialist and he ran like that in 1989 and almost won), he had to moderate his goverment and speech to win the 2002 and 2006 elections.

Come january*, but yes. Election is won, now we still have to win against the coup attempt (coup narrative has started, see my othe comment in this post)
