Ordinarily, I avoid straying into the American domestic situation, but the government shutdown appears to be continuing into increasingly harmful territory. If the situation is not resolved, soon tens of millions of Americans will lose food assistance, and already millions of federal employees are furloughed or are working without pay. To those not in the know, this situation has essentially stemmed from the Democrats refusing to sign off on the Republicans’ plan to substantially shrink Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, which would eventually result in tens of millions losing healthcare coverage and tens if not hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths.
To be clear, though, the Democrats have not exactly been paragons of healthcare: they not only oppose plans to make affordable healthcare a right (in defiance of wide popular opinion), but also do their part to maximize suffering. Biden’s policies during the pandemic ensured at least one million people died, and millions of children lost public healthcare coverage. We may never know the true toll, as the US decided that simply ceasing to report on a problem means that the problem no longer exists.
In other news, over the last couple weeks, the US has expanded their hostility against Venezuela by also including Colombia in their ire, and particularly the left-leaning leader, Petro. Both countries are now experiencing major economic and covert pressure by the US to try and cause regime change. The US has deployed an aircraft carrier to the waters near Venezuela and is conducting a military training operation with Trinidad and Tobago, which Venezuela has warned may be the prelude to the long-awaited attack.
Additionally, the US is attempting to combat Chinese geopolitical interest in central America and the Caribbean by carrying out digital attacks and launching pressure campaigns against Chinese and pro-Chinese countries and organizations. Given China’s enormous economic weight, if central America were to break all ties with China, it would be a catastrophe for them; such decisions would only be made by outright compradors, and the resulting economic problems would make their reigns unpopular and, hopefully, brief.

Pentagon Frets Over ‘A House of Dynamite’ Nuclear Doomsday Film
The plot of A House of Dynamite, the new thriller from Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow, hinges on — spoiler alert — US missile defenses failing to knock down a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile headed for Chicago.
more
The Pentagon agency responsible for the more than $50 billion system of ground-based interceptors in Alaska and California designed to avoid just such a scenario isn’t happy about it. The movie, starring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, had a limited theater release and is now streaming on Netflix. A Missile Defense Agency internal memorandum argues that the doomsday scenario depicted in the movie is inaccurate. The Oct. 16 memo, a copy of which was obtained by Bloomberg News, is meant to make sure agency leadership “has situational awareness and is not ‘surprised’ by the topic, which may come up in conversations or meetings.” The object of the Missile Defense Agency’s angst is depiction of US missile defense as ineffective, especially in light of the fact that President Donald Trump wants to spend tens of billions of dollars on missile defense, including with his bid for a “Golden Dome” defensive umbrella.
The document, labeled “Only For Internal MDA and Department of War use and is not public releasable,” is dated a day after almost every member of the Pentagon press corps, including Bloomberg News, vacated the building rather than agree to rules that could restrict news gathering of documents such as the MDA assessment. It was prepared to “address false assumptions, provide correct facts and a better understanding” of the US’s currently deployed system, it said. While the film “highlights that deterrence can fail, which reinforces the need for an active homeland missile defense system,” its fictional portrayal also underestimates US capabilities, according to the memo. “The fictional interceptors in the movie miss their target and we understand this is intended to be a compelling part of the drama intended for the entertainment of the audience,” but results from real-world testing “tell a vastly different story,” the Pentagon says in the memo.
lol. lmao. um, if you would consult the real-world testing charts, you’d know we actually have a 10000% interception rate

As guidance for questions about the system’s cost, the memo avoids a dollar amount, saying “the cost is high but not nearly as high as the cost of allowing a nuclear missile to strike our nation.” A Government Accountability Office report in 2020 said the Pentagon had spent about $53 billion on the ground-based system and planned to spend about $10 billion through this year to continue developing, producing and sustaining it.
The system is managed by Boeing Co. and operated by personnel under the US Northern Command.

Accuracy Rate
One focus of the memo is a line in the movie in which the defense secretary, played by Jared Harris, laments that current missile defenses have a 50% chance of knocking down a missile despite their $50 billion price tag. The MDA says that’s based on earlier prototypes and today’s interceptors “have displayed a 100% accuracy rate in testing for more than a decade.”
holy shit, the above thing was a joke, but no, they actually genuinely claimed that they totally have a 100% rate. isn’t this the kind of blatant propaganda that only those pesky third-world dictatorships are supposed to engage in?

Experts dispute that. Laura Grego, a long-time missile defense critic with the Union of Concerned Scientists who has seen the film, said the scenario it depicts is the least threatening possible — a single missile on a known trajectory. Military tests have been similarly limited, she said. “A robust defense should anticipate facing multiple incoming ICBMs and credible decoys, and direct attacks on missile defense elements, but none of those were part of the story in this film,” Grego said. “The fictional threat is arguably about as easy as they come.” The Pentagon said in a statement to Bloomberg News that it wasn’t consulted for the film, which “does not reflect the views or priorities of this administration.” The system “remains a critical component of our national defense strategy, ensuring the safety and security of the American people and our allies.”
A Netflix spokesperson didn’t respond to a request for comment. A representative for Bigelow pointed to her remarks on CBS’s Sunday Morning arguing that she didn’t seek cooperation from the Pentagon. “I felt that we needed to be more independent,” she told CBS. “But that being said, we had multiple tech advisers who have worked in the Pentagon. They were with me every day we shot.”’ The Trump administration hasn’t disclosed substantive details of its still ill-defined Golden Dome land, sea and space-based defensive shield. Space Force General Michael Guetlein, the four-star general leading the effort, last month completed a blueprint for the program. The Pentagon declined to provide details about its scope or cost.
God that film sounds fucking stupid lmao
Did the film say why Israel or the US would nuke Chicago?

Production Delays Hit HIMARS as Estonia Explores Korean Rocket Systems
Although Estonia has already purchased HIMARS from the U.S. in 2022 and plans to buy more, it has also been negotiating a K239 Chunmoo deal with South Korea
more
Estonia has reached an agreement with South Korea on a potential purchase of K239 Chunmoo MLRS. This is notable because Estonia already ordered U.S. M142 HIMARS broadly comparable systems but the interest may stem from insufficient delivery rates. According to The Korea Times, a memorandum of understanding was signed by the defence ministers of both countries during a meeting in Seoul. No further details on contract volume, price or delivery timelines have been released.
The report also notes Estonian interest in AS21 (K21) Redback infantry fighting vehicles. That aligns with Tallinn’s previously stated plans to replace CV90 IFVs, which it bought used in 2014 and which are approaching the end of their service life. From Defense Express’s perspective, Estonia’s interest in South Korean kit is not surprising: the country already operates 155 mm K9 SPHs. South Korea’s defence industry has also shown the ability to deliver equipment at scale and on relatively short schedules.
On the other hand, Estonia has already bought U.S. M142 HIMARS, which have broadly similar capabilities. Details of a previously reported $200 million contract are not public, but the export approval covered up to six launchers, 18 ATACMS rockets, 36 GMLRS packs (6 rockets each) and 72 ER GMLRS packs at a not-to-exceed price of $500 million. It’s worth noting that although the order was placed in 2022, the first systems only arrived this year, in 2025. Back in February, Estonia’s defence minister Hanno Pevkur publicly expressed frustration with those delivery timelines and raised the possibility of choosing an alternative. Recently, there were reports that Tallinn wants to buy additional HIMARS and associated munitions worth $4.73 billion. That deal has not been signed yet, so Chunmoo could still be selected instead. South Koreas defence industry can manufacture the requested systems quickly, and Poland is currently working to localize production of K239 ammunition which would provide local rounds supply though that effort is not yet finalised due to lack of funding from Warsaw.

That’s a really funny response.
Trump says Milei had “a lot of help” from the US to win the election in Argentina. During his trip to Asia, Trump celebrated the Argentine president’s victory, but also took credit for the success.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Argentine President Javier Milei had “a lot of help” from Washington to secure his party’s victory in the midterm legislative elections, after the US government offered a bailout package worth up to US$40 billion to strengthen Milei before the vote.
“He had a lot of help from us. A lot of help. I supported him—a very strong support,” Trump said, also crediting part of the success to members of his cabinet, such as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who oversaw financial assistance to Argentina.
“We are firm with several countries in South America. We pay a lot of attention to South America,” the president added. “We made a lot of money on this election because the bonds went up. Argentina’s entire credit rating improved,” Trump said, stressing, however, that the US “is not in this just for the money.”
- Telegram
Indeed he did. The two 20 billion USD bailouts came in at the right time. Of course they’ll have absolutely no positive impact on the economy, no bridges would be built, no schools will be repaired and no new hospitals will open. We all know that “generous” bailout from the US is not aimed at improving our material conditions rather than saving whatever investor really fucked up and creating a scenario of “immediate default” as soon as any administration takes power other than those approved by the US.
And the main opposition couldn’t even capitalize on this, either. Here’s a small story:
In the midst of the 1946 presidential elections, Perón was likely to be the winner. He was the de-facto leader of the “1943 Revolution”, using his military rank, his position as vice-president and Secretary of Labour and Social Security he had gained A LOT of support from working class people. In that context, the US Ambassador to Argentina, Spruille Braden, openly opposed Perón’s rise to power and campaigned against him. The problem is that this didn’t go well with people in general and Perón was able to capitalize this foreign intervention to his favor. Thus Peronism became anti-interventionist and Braden polarized the elections, the now iconic phrase “Braden o Perón” was born. In the end, Perón won despite the direct US interference.
This time around Peronists are so devoid of political content and guidance that they couldn’t even formulate an anti-interventionist rethoric even though it’s ridiculously clear to all of us that the US is DIRECTLY INTERFERING. They had some timid responses, but nothing major. And this time around we don’t have some ambassador talking shit, we have the US President himself talking directly about our elections. It goes to show that Peronists are still looking at the US with fond eyes, that they abandonned whatever anti-US attitude they once had (which, still, it was short lived, as Perón normalized relations with the US in the late 40s) and they will not take a fighting stance if they win the presidential elections in two years which, to be honest, is looking very very unlikely now.
This country absolutely loves the US and it shows. Which why I said a week or so ago that we are now fully tied with the US empire, when they fall, they’ll take us and “israel” with them.
Straight up just a repeat of 1996 Russia. Can we expect Milei’s successor to declare war on
then?Oh so they cheated. I was wondering exactly how in the fuck Milei won again.
The peronists (mostly socdems, but some are neolibs) are unpopular (Milei also bragged about arresting CFK, the main opposition figure in Argentina). But it’s pretty clear that the US gave a bunch of money just so their guy wins the election, they did the same thing multiple times before (which is why sometimes literal nobodies win elections in the Global South).
Straight up foreign interference, but it’s Venezuela who has rigged elections
The last time US bragged about rigging an election so openly was Boris Yeltsin.
Everytime I hear about Argentina I get more and more depressed
To me it’s every time I wake up and realize I am, in fact, living in this country.
I mean the bailout is big help. Just by offering that bailout to the current Argentinian government, Trump secured millions of votes for Milei.
Also polls always underrepresent this new era of right wing politicians since 2016. Polls showed Trump and Harris at a statistical tie in 2024, yet Trump delivered the biggest Republican win in decades. Polls showed Clinton beating Trump comfortably, Trump narrowly won instead. Polls showed Biden vs Trump to be a blowout, and while Biden still won, it was much closer than the polling suggested. It seems that people are shy to state that they’re voting for this new kind of politician, even to pollsters, and the methodology has not been corrected. A better way to look at polling in the modern age is to look at which candidate or party is ahead on the key issues, people are less shy about that. For instance, Trump polled ahead of Harris on almost every key issue.
Indonesia’s Prabowo Orders Portuguese to Be Taught in Schools - Tempo English
President Prabowo Subianto announced that Portuguese will soon be added to Indonesia’s school curriculum, underscoring the country’s deepening ties with Brazil.
Article
“I will instruct the higher education and basic education ministers to begin teaching Portuguese in our schools,” Prabowo said at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
“This is proof that we regard the relationship between Brazil and Indonesia as highly important.”
The President’s statement came during a bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is in Indonesia for a state visit. Prabowo said the move reflects the strengthening partnership between the two nations.
During the meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of four cooperation agreements between Indonesia and Brazil.
“When I last met President Lula in July, we agreed to accelerate collaboration. In just two months, August and September, we’ve made remarkable progress,” Prabowo said.
He also announced that Indonesia and Brazil will soon begin drafting the Indonesia–Mercosur Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IM-CEPA), which is expected to bolster trade and economic growth for both nations.
“I believe this agreement will strengthen our partnership and help accelerate the economic growth of both countries, and the wider Latin American region,” he added.
Prabowo described Indonesia and Brazil as emerging global economic powers, with a combined population of around 500 million people. He also highlighted that both nations are members of the BRICS alliance (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).
Meanwhile, President Lula da Silva expressed his intention to renew and expand strategic cooperation with Indonesia, particularly in technology, education, and trade.
“I have come to renew our strategic partnership and establish new agreements—not only in bilateral trade but also in new sectors such as artificial intelligence, data centralization, and scientific and technological collaboration,” Lula said.
He also emphasized the importance of building academic partnerships between universities in both countries and promoting balanced, mutually beneficial trade. “Indonesia is a strategic partner for Brazil,” he said.
President Lula da Silva arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2025, via Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base. His visit is a reciprocal trip following President Prabowo’s state visit to Brasília in July 2025.
According to the Presidential Secretariat, the visit aims to further strengthen strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Brazil across multiple sectors.
Pretty weird development considering Indonesia invaded and occupied East Timor (a Portuguese colony) for many years.

Venezuela claims capture of CIA group, accuses U.S. of plotting ‘false flag’ attack
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/venezuela/article312660489.html
The majority of the libs on social media & Reddit are mad that the Trump administration is incompetent at executing the brutal business of the empire. There is some discussion about opposing regime change and other crimes like randomly blowing up civilian boats, but they are a clear minority. US Congress mostly doesn’t care.
“not against wars, just stupid wars”

Against all wars except the current one.
It seems like because it’s Trump a lot of the libs I’m seeing don’t believe the rhetoric, a lot of upvoted comments on r/worldnews of all places saying he was murdering fishermen etc. I was surprised to see the response to one commenter saying they were Venezuelan and their government was lying about capturing foreign agents, that they were corrupt and everything, all the replies were saying that Maduro was right and were defending Venezuela.
I was surprised to see the response to one commenter saying they were Venezuelan and their government was lying about capturing foreign agents, that they were corrupt and everything, all the replies were saying that Maduro was right and were defending Venezuela.
I guess no one likes gusanos.
Gusanos got a lot of shit from libs for voting Trump in the first place
The Venezuelan government did not release any evidence or details about the alleged arrests, such as the number of suspects, their nationalities, or when and where they were detained.
That’s concerning. Last time they captured those mercenaries in Trump’s previous term they presented them clearly. Could be keeping it secret for operational security though, so that the US doesn’t know who is compromised.
I’m not going to call them on it till the US start producing evidence that any of the boats they targeted were carrying drugs
Last time it was ostensibly peacetime (or at least a lull) and the propaganda may have outweighed the intel value. We’ll see
Yeah, since the US is certainly running many different operations, there’s no advantage to making which ones get squashed public
LOL wut? Remember when Chuck Schumer did exactly that, and everyone (rightfully) got pissed off at him? Republicans control the house, the senate, the executive and the courts. Blaming the shutdown on democrats is ridiculous GOP propaganda
This is the Dem fault because they are filibustering the bill. Of course, the Republicans are not obligated to honor the filibuster, so it is actually the fault of the Republicans for not just going forward with 50+ votes.
To add to this, I am pretttty sure that the GOP could just make a budget bill, pass it in the house, then use reconciliation (parliamentarian approved) to just need a simple majority in the senate, and the government would be funded.
allegedly you can only do that once per year, which they did already
not that it makes a difference to them since 1) they could just do it again and nobody would stop them, and 2) they don’t want to, a shutdown damages social programs just as effectively as cuts
IIRC you can’t use reconciliation for that, but I’m not sure. But you can pass a Senate rule (with 50 votes) that says the budget can’t be filibustered and you can ignore the parliamentarian. The GOP just ignored the parliamentarian on a bunch of stuff with their BBB bill. On some stuff they didn’t care about, they listened to the parliamentarian, on the stuff they cared about they just pretended that the parliamentarian doesn’t exist, they didn’t even hold a vote to ignore the parliamentarian’s recommendations.
Man, I can’t wait for the Democrats to get a majority again and happily go back to pretending this can’t be done.
A Russian Il-76TD cargo plane belonging to Aviacon Zitotrans landed in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, yesterday. The flight departed from Mauritania on Sunday afternoon (10/26). Il-76 planes are commonly used to transport military equipment. This is the Russian plane that flew a very long route from Moscow to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. There are no reports on what type of cargo it was carrying, but this specific plane is widely used to transport military equipment and troops.
- Telegram

One plane is probably not going to carry anything game changing. My best guess is that Russia will send over some technicians and spare parts so more of Venezuela’s Russian made Su-30s and air defence systems (Buk M2E and S-300VM) can get into serviceable condition. Maybe some munitions for the aircraft and air defence systems.
After the arrival of the Russian plane, this new photo of a Venezuelan Su-30 was posted, showing it fitted with modern armaments (first such photo in recent months).

From left to right R-73, R-27ER, Kh-29, two R-77-1s (I think, can’t think of anything else) under the engine intakes, KAB-500, R-27ET, Kh-31, R-73
Some interesting commentary on Russia’s new, nuclear-powered cruise missile (the Burevestnik) and its implications for Washington’s “Golden Dome” anti-missile system:
“The Burevestnik is a game changer… the missile can go around anti-aircraft zones around radar zones… it stayed in the air for 16 hours. Possibly can stay in the air longer. What this means is it’s a second-strike weapon, which means that if Russia is struck, it will strike back,” Krapivnik said.
“Right now, radar systems and anti-aircraft systems, normally for ballistic missiles like this, are set up on likely ballistic trajectories from nations that may fire on the US: North Korea, China, and Russia. So they don’t have to cover the entire US. With this missile, they would have to cover the entire United States, which makes everything much, much more difficult and much more expensive,” Krapivnik stated.
https://www.rt.com/news/626975-russian-burevestnik-cruise-missile/
That’s the same as any other cruise missile though? Russia already has the Kh-102 and Kh-55 cruise missiles with thousands of kilometres of range, and dozens to hundreds of these can be launched by a squadron strategic bombers (Tu-160 = 12 Kh-102s, Tu-95MSM = 8 Kh-102 + 6 Kh-55, Tu-95MS = 6 Kh-55) over the Atlantic, Pacific or Arctic, and hit any location in the United States with a nuclear strike. So I fail to see the difference in the defence picture here. The biggest difference is because of the range of the Burevestnik, no strategic bombers are needed for a launch, but the time to target is roughly the same as using the bombers. Maybe a little bit faster than a Tu-95 or a little bit slower than a Tu-160.
That’s not to downplay the incredible technical achievement of a nuclear powered cruise missile. It is very impressive. I just don’t see how it’s any harder to shoot down than a regular cruise missile.
I guess you can have them loitering 24/7/365 since the energy source is (almost) limitless. You could do just like the US did, and have them come back to land periodically like little autonomous drones.
I think the difference is in the ability to do so without needing to take-off. The US would intend on stopping any take-offs once they begin an attack, but a missile isn’t going to be stopped like an aircraft can. But this is just me reading between the lines.
