Attempt at a first variation of a thread to help facilitate organizing/hosting/scheduling/impromptu fill-ins for when someone can’t make it and possibly gather ideas/suggestions if this isn’t adequate enough.
edit: this will probably just be primarily for when someone who is hosting in a time slot can’t make it for the time being or for people who have some sharing arrangement
Line of succession for Erika: @AernaLingus@hexbear.net | @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net → @wombat@hexbear.net → @Camden28@hexbear.net → @Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net
I’ve been thinking about requesting a time slot to show some classic TV sci-fi. I’m debating between three.
#1: Star Trek (on a “best of” basis)
No need to explain the plot here, I think it’s baked into popular culture enough that even non-fans know about it. The adventures of (mostly) human starship crews as they explore the galaxy with hope in their hearts. There’s a lot of good Trek but also a lot of mid and bad Trek, so I’m thinking of just showing the best episodes from the original 1960s series and the 1980s/1990s The Next Generation. It would probably work out to about 10-15 from TOS, and maybe 30-40 from TNG. Perhaps with a sprinkling of DS9 or Voyager episodes as well for variety.
Pros: I think this would have broad appeal. Not many CWs to worry about in the episodes I’m thinking of screening, no worries about missing part of long story arc, lots of variety in the episodes, no real chud-ism among the main characters.
Cons: There’s some dated sexism stuff in even some of the good episodes, especially in wardrobe.
#2: Babylon 5
By the mid-23rd century, humans have developed basic star travel and taken a place in the local galactic neighbourhood as a middling power. A disastrous first-contact misunderstanding led to a very advanced alien species called the Minbari launching a genocidal years-long war against humanity. The Minbari were mere hours from launching an unstoppable full-scale attack against Earth itself when the Minbari unexpectedly surrendered. The Minbari spent the next decade making reparations and establishing a peaceful alliance with humans. Nobody in the galaxy knows why the Minbari surrendered except the nine members of the Minbari leadership - the Grey Council. One of the reparation-funding projects was a series of massive human-controlled space stations in neutral territories, each home to hundreds of thousands of humans and aliens. The Babylon stations were intended to be places of diplomacy, commerce, and cultural exchange in the hopes of preventing wars. But darkness is rising on the rim of known space. The last of the Babylon stations is all that stands between the darkness and the light.
The story is one continuous arc with occasional standalone episodes fleshing out the world and characters. It’s what I’d call a “spoiler danger” series where it’s easy to accidentally be spoiled if one reads up on it. It’s best to go in completely blind and simply trust me that the slow burn of the first season will pay off, and that the grande finale is very earned and conclusive and satisfying.
Pros: There’s basically zero misogyny, the creator/showrunner/writer (J. Michael Straczynski, known to fans simply as JMS) worked directly with the actresses on how to better portray their characters and write realistic dialogue. JMS wrote almost all of the episodes by himself which is very good for continuity and consistent characterization. There’s a strong pro-labour-union, pro-working-class undercurrent. Few if any CWs to worry about. It’s a very non-horny show, so hopefully any ace comrades will feel comfortable watching it.
Cons: It’s very long, 5 seasons (110 episodes), not everyone might want to make that sort of time commitment.
Fun trivia: JMS created the character of She-Ra in the 1980s while he worked in the TV cartoon industry. His professional background is largely in cartoons and comics. B5 is his passion project.
#3: Farscape
From the late 1990s/early 2000s. An American astronaut and physics PhD named John Crichton is working for the fictional IASA, the International Aeronautics and Space Administration. He’s developing a new theory of reactionless propulsion for spacecraft. During a test flight in his one-person space pod deployed from a space shuttle, he’s accidentally shot through a wormhole into a distant part of the universe. He finds himself on board a prisoner transport ship that the other prisoners aboard managed to commandeer from their jailers, a major interstellar fascist empire called the Peacekeepers. A relentless Peacekeeper military leader chases John and his ex-prisoner alien friends throughout the galaxy because John may have the key knowledge needed to control and weaponize wormholes.
Pros: A lot of the aliens were made by the Jim Henson Company. They wanted to avoid Star Trek style “funny nose bumps and wigs” human-looking aliens, and CGI wasn’t remotely good enough at the time to do realistic aliens, so they made highly-detailed and highly-articulated alien muppets. This has helped the show age very well, the muppet aliens are among the best work the Jim Henson Company has ever done, they’re in every single episode.
Cons: This is another long one, 4 seasons with 88 episodes total, another major time commitment for viewers. It’s less episodic than Star Trek but more episodic than Babylon 5.
YMMV: It’s a very horny series, as horny as was legally possible for American TV in the late 1990s. Ace comrades may or may not be comfortable with some scenes or even entire episodes.

My current plan for if I am ever absent myself is for @AernaLingus@hexbear.net to take over for me and follow my schedule, if I can provide advanced warning. On the off chance that I am ever absent without advanced warning, then I don’t know, @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net → @wombat@hexbear.net → @Camden28@hexbear.net → @Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net seems like a good “line of succession”, and if none of these four are available, the other regular blorphosts can debate amongst themselves who should take over for me. Once I get back, I might ask to borrow days from other blorpers just so I can get back on schedule.
If I haven’t made an announcement post by five hours before my usual time — I usually try to make one by around T-9 hours — then you should start preparing someone to take over for me, but still wait to see if I get back by T-2 hours.

@Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net Since I hosted today, do you want to take the 21th of this month?
well, I guess I can take it (actually I planned to let @deathtoreddit@lemmygrad.ml take it),
and since neither death nor me will be at June 28th, you will take it @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net, death will recontinue on July 5th hopefully and you will be back on July 12th and 19th (edited)
does that sound fine and understandable? I hope it doesn’t too complicated

Ok

Sorry I mean July 12th and 19th, but yeah, you get what I mean. You take the middle of the month, me and death take the edges, the start and end of it.
Ok, if something happens and you can host on those days post it here so other people can fill-in for you.
Eh, uh, I don’t think I be there at the 25th of October, maybe November 1st, I suppose.
Ok. Let me know if you can’t host anything tomorrow. I have some movies uploaded in case you can’t show up.
Lemgra, why didn’t you tell me this beforehand…

Did we ever decide what to do about Camden being absent today? As I understand it: if HarryLime can’t or doesn’t want to show I, Claudius tonight, then Redcuban1959 should be asked to host something, and if Redcuban1959 doesn’t want to, then Wombat.
I thought HarryLime ws going to host a show today? In anycase, if Camden and HarryLime can’t host anything today I have something short I can show.
I guess it’s going to be you, then.
Ok, i’ll make a post soon

Oh crud. I did not
@Redcuban1959@hexbear.net @Erika3sis@hexbear.net
HarryLime and I have an arrangement where they will show I, Claudius in July on Monday. It’s a series so starting it now on Tues would be mean either stopping it or taking more days than just today.
Ok

I had a movie in mind, but in case someone agrees on something else first and does it before me, I will let them do their kino shenanigans
Otherwise, I’ll come in
Since you have been with us, me and death, and are fellow blorp hosts yourself
as an emergency case, @Camden28@hexbear.net and @tithonis@hexbear.net , I give you permission to be me and @deathtoreddit@lemmygrad.ml 's substitutes, especially due to some work school life imbalance I am in, and to a lesser extent, death shares the same issues
While death does have his plans for this week, it may not be certain if he can appear
Yeah, on second thoughts, I might have to ask @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net to cover for me tomorrow - I’m off for a trip.
Ok

Ayo cube, are you planning to host some movies at this time?
Yes. i’ll make the post
Hey, why not Cam nor Tith?
Nothing personal. It’s just cube usually covers for us, he’s usually prepared for such things but I guess they can do as well.
I’m fine with filling-in for anyone who can’t host
If I can get a good download, can I show I, Claudius? Maybe two episodes weekly?
If you are available Tuesdays from 20:00 UTC / 24:00 UTC (4-8pm New York), you can play it in my slot. I’m downloading it now, so I haven’t confirmed the quality, but it claims to be the whole series at 1280x720p HD, 50fps, soft Eng subs.
I found a version but thank you
just to jot it down i think harry and i have an arrangement
sorry greb idk what innuendo I was even inferring
Yeah and we’ve scheduled some shows too heyooooooooooooo
lol
i and some others want to get a fargo watch party going. I have wednesdays and weekends off work.
Saturday or Sunday from 2 or 3PM to 5PM ET would work.
Great should I prepare to post this weekend then?
Well, let the blorpers know, me and/or Lem are to be active on 21st, inactive on 28th so @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net can take this sesh, and me and/or Lem will back at July 5th.
ok. Sorry for taking long to reply to this, for some reason this didn’t show up on my notifications.Maybe this didn’t exactly federate well. I checked on chapo.chat and it didn’t appear initially.
@tithonis@hexbear.net You’ll host the last episode of Eternauta this Sunday, and I’ll host Golgo movie

I got the last episode of El Eternauta all sorted out, are you going to do the writeup for the night? The link is the same, the CWs are the same as in this Thursday’s post. Also: do we wanna do the whole ep or just the last 20 minutes or so that we missed?
How long is the entire episode?
68 minutes total
that leaves us with some free time for vids in between i think
@Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net I will show Nuummioq on July 18 and Maison Ikkoku: Apartment Fantasy on August 15. I will assume I have your permission unless you state otherwise.
Edit: Lemmygradwontallowme confirms on Matrix that this is OK.
double confirmed
