For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979), a German drama from renowned auteur Rainer Fassbinder, whose Fox and His Friends (1975) and The Bitter Tears of Petra van Kant (1972) we previously watched. A German woman is widowed at the end of WW2 and navigates the ruins of post-war Germany by seducing an American soldier during the occupation, and uses her beauty and sexuality to find prosperity amidst the country’s recovery. This is one of Fassbinder’s best-regarded works, and one of the highest-rated German films on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.

After that, by request, is Primetime (2026), a drama starring Robert Pattinson as Dateline correspondent Chris Hansen, the mastermind behind recurring pedophile-snaring segment To Catch a Predator. The movie begins in 2006, at the height of Hansen’s powers, as he is determined to beat Lost (2004) in a primetime ratings duel, and willing to heighten the spectacle of his program by whatever means he can. Uh-oh, legal troubles start hounding NBC after a botched sting, and the whole enterprise threatens to come crashing down. This is the best-known and best-regarded work to date of director Lance Oppenheim, who also did the retirement-home documentary Some Kind of Heaven (2020), which we have not yet watched. A decent-quality camrip has just appeared for Primetime, so that is what we will watch.
