For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Code Geass (2006), a sci-fi anime, marking a collaboration between Gundam studio Sunrise and noodle-people factory CLAMP. It follows the adventures of noodle-man Lelouch, a student of the Holy Empire of Britannia in the near future of 2010, as the regime prepares for its final conquest of Japan. A mysterious green-haired girl suddenly appears and grants him superpowers, which he decides to use to rebel against his country, seeking revenge for past grievances. Director Goro Taniguchi also helmed Planetes (2003), as well as a bunch of Gundam stuff, while writer Ichiro Okouchi also wrote AAzumanga Daioh (2002) and Mahou Sensei Negima (2005). In addition, the artists of CLAMP also created Cardcaptor Sakura (1994) and Magic Knight Rayearth (1994), both of which we previously watched. This is often considered one of the best anime of all time, so let’s give it a whirl. Episodes 7 through 12 tonight.

After that is Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island (2026), the first feature film adaptation of Chiikawa (2022), a series of one-minute anime comedy shorts about cute plushie-esque creatures of indeterminate species who do silly things. There is no overarching storyline to follow; each short is self-contained, and so is this movie, which features the eponymous Chiikawa and his friends in a folk-horror setting. They find themselves lured by the promise of a big payday to an island menaced by a monstrous mermaid that kidnaps the local inhabitants. Chiikawa and co. are hired to hunt down the beast, but uh-oh, what if it isn’t as evil as it seems? I guess we’ll find out. This has received rave reviews across the board, and is currently one of the highest-rated animated films on Letterboxd, in addition to being the biggest box-office hit of 2026 in Japan. A high-quality camrip has just appeared, so that is what we will watch.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
