For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Volver (2006), a Spanish tramedy from renowned auteur Pedro Almodovar, whose work has appeared a few times on the ‘tube, namely Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), All About My Mother (1999), and The Skin I Live In (2011). A Spanish mother (Peneolope Cruz) in Madrid kills her abusive husband and stuffs his body into a freezer. She then attends the grave of her mother with her sister, only for mom to suddenly return from the dead and start tying up the loose ends she couldn’t while she was alive. What’s going on here? Will more revelations come to light. I guess we’ll find out. This is one of the highest-rated Spanish films on Letterboxd, so let’s give it a shot.

BONUS: Between the features, we will view Norman McLaren’s 13-minute short Pas de Deux (1968), which features two silhouettes dancing with all sorts of fancy and surreal camera-exposure effects. This is considered one of McLaren’s best works. We previously watched his war satire Neighbours (1952).

After that is Forgotten Island, an animated fantasy-comedy from Dreamworks, in what critics are calling their best feature in awhile. Two high-school girls in 1980s Philippines celebrate their last night together before they go off to college, only to discover a key to a portal leading to an island realm ruled by Philippine mythological creatures. Uh-oh, they don’t have the key back, and they’ve lost their memories after a night of wild fantastical partying, and now, they need to find a way to return home. Director Joel Crawford previously helmed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), and this film is similar in aesthetic. A camrip has just appeared, so that is what we will watch; it is of unusually high quality, to the point that I wasn’t sure if it was a camrip at first.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
